Business Continuity Awareness -  BCA 100

A fast paced lecture style, full day session that provides a high level overview of contemporary methodology and best practices used to implement a comprehensive business continuity program. This session is beneficial for employees who have an indirect or ancillary role in the development and maintenance of business continuity plans. DRI CANADA Instructors can make limited modifications to the session to assist in private or public sector organization which makes it an ideal in-house course. Additionally the session can be further customized to a shorter length for delivery as an executive seminar.

BIA 100 is a 4 hour course. Enter the world of business impact analysis (BIA), and learn how important this element is to the functional requirements phase of the business continuity management program. Emphasizing class participation and utilizing team ideas, you’ll learn to plan and successfully conduct a Business Impact Analysis project. Topics include the business continuity management program and a proven planning methodology.

BCLF 2000 is the French version of BCLE 2000. BCOE 2000 is the on-line version of BCLE 2000, available to Canadians and expatriates only.


This brand new version of DRI’s seminal course, Business Continuity (BCLE 2000), enables you to build a business continuity program based on the most up to the minute information and the most utilized and time tested standard in the field because the DRI International Professional Practices for Business Continuity Management are just that. Newly revamped and long the leading standard in our profession by a mile, the Professional Practices are the foundation upon which this 4 day classroom/online or 30 day on-line, in depth, hands on course is built.

Instruction includes all ten Professional Practices detailed below, including new and expanded coverage of cloud computing, cyber threats, supply chain, risk transfer, insurance considerations, legal and regulatory requirements, and manufacturing processes, as well as more traditional topics such as evaluating risks, gaining leadership buy in, crisis communications, and program audit. Audience: The BCLE-2000 and BCOE 2000 courses are designed for individuals on the path to, or with interest in becoming a DRI Certified Business Continuity Professional. It is based on the new DRI International Professional Practices for Business Continuity Practitioners.  As the course works through the major elements of business continuity planning, it will give participants the tools to both; succeed in the field and, develop a robust program that will protect your organization.

DRIC Certification: Upon successfully completing the Qualifying Exam one may apply to DRI CANADA for professional certification. The ABCP certification fee is $200 and includes your first year of membership. A Certification Application Fee paid between Jan 1 and Jul 31 will cover the applicant's Membership and Administration Fee to Dec 31 of the current year; a Certification Application Fee paid between Aug 1 and Dec 31 will cover the applicant's Membership and Administration Fee to Dec 31 of the following year.

Course Outline:
While the course follows the DRI International BCLE 2000 course, American references in the materials have been replaced with Canadian equivalents. The modules in the course follow the 10 new Professional Practices:

Lesson 1: Program Initiation and Management

  • Establish the need for a business continuity program.
  • Obtain support and funding for the business continuity program.
  • Build the organizational framework to support the business continuity program.
  • Introduce key concepts, such as program management, risk awareness, identification of critical functions/processes, recovery strategies, training and awareness, and exercising/testing.
  • Class Exercise: Learn about practical application by developing a presentation for leadership on the importance of business continuity, relevant legal and regulatory requirements, project resource requirements, and a project plan overview with well defined deliverables.

Lesson 2: Risk Assessment

  • Identify risks that can adversely affect an entity’s resources or image.
  • Assess risks to determine the potential impacts to the entity, enabling the entity to determine the most effective use of resources to reduce these potential impacts.
  • Class Exercise: Develop a presentation for leadership identifying three significant threats, determining what controls are currently in place for these threats, and your recommendations to improve current controls or implement new controls for each threat; develop an outline for a risk assessment report.

Lesson 3: Business Impact Analysis

  • Identify and prioritize the entity’s functions and processes in order to ascertain which ones will have the greatest impact should they not be available.
  • Assess the resources required to support the business impact analysis process.
  • Analyze the findings to ascertain any gaps between the entity’s requirements and its ability to deliver those requirements.
  • Class Exercise: Develop a prioritized list of business functions and processes, the criticality category of each business function and process, and their RTOs.

Lesson 4: Business Continuity Strategies

  • Select cost-effective strategies to reduce deficiencies as identified during the risk assessment and business impact analysis processes.
  • Workshop Exercise: Build on previous exercises to identify continuity/recovery strategies, including a brief description, the advantages and disadvantages, and a cost estimate of each strategy. Discuss how you would present recommendations for leadership approval.

Lesson 5: Incident Response

  • Develop and assist with the implementation of an incident management system that defines organizational roles, lines of authority and succession of authority.
  • Define requirements to develop and implement the entity’s incident response plan. Ensure that incident response is coordinated with outside organizations in a timely and effective manner when appropriate.
  • Class Exercise: Identify the actions needed to be performed to respond to events, list any special training needed, determine type of plan needed, and list recommendations needed for incident response.

Lesson 6: Plan Development and Implementation

  • Document plans to be used during an incident that will enable the entity to continue to function.
  • Class Exercise: Identify the type of business continuity plan needed by your entity, develop the plan’s scope, objectives and assumptions, and outline basic information about the plan and how it relates to the business continuity program.

Lesson 7: Awareness and Training Programs

  • Establish and maintain training and awareness programs that result in personnel being able to respond to incidents in a calm and efficient manner.
  • Class Exercise: Develop a floor warden training program that includes vital training subjects, frequency, selection process, and other emergency response recommendations.

Lesson 8: Business Continuity Plan Exercise, Audit, and Maintenance

  • Establish an exercise, assessment and maintenance program to maintain a state of readiness.
  • Class Exercise: Develop an exercise/test scenario relevant for your entity, assess the resources needed, what will be exercised/tested, and write the steps to follow.

Lesson 9: Crisis Communications

  • Provide a framework for developing a crisis communications plan.
  • Ensure that the crisis communications plan will provide for timely, effective communication with internal and external parties.
  • Class Exercise: Determine whether an event is a potential crisis, the nature of the crisis, the interested parties, the spokesperson(s), and the key message.

Lesson 10: Coordination with External Agencies

  • Establish policies and procedures to coordinate incident response activities with public entities.

Lesson 11: Qualifying Examination Review

  • Review the important concepts from each of the earlier lessons.
  • Prepare for the Qualifying Examination through a review of the Practice Examination questions.

BCLE-AUD CSA Z1600 is designed for internal & external auditors, experienced corporate planners, and persons interested in self-assessing programs, assessing program for clients, or performing audits to better measure their state of preparedness. This course is an interactive program that provides training, tools and hands-on experience to help attendees understand the key components of continuity and emergency management programs. This course covers relevant standard, laws and regulations, the process of risk assessment, vulnerability analysis, loss prevention, risk mitigation, and the development, implementation, testing and maintenance of plans and procedures. Course materials delve into existing legal and regulatory requirements by industry and country, as well as emerging requirements. Specifically CSA Z1600-2017 and DRI International’s professional practices.  Examples in financial services, insurance, healthcare, utilities, public sector guidance and a host of others will be explored. If you’re in a hurry to take your career to the next level, Business Continuity Review (BCP 501) is for you. This short, yet highly effective, refresher course will re-acquaint you with the key elements of business continuity and is based on the recently revamped DRI Professional Practices for Business Continuity Management – the most utilized and time-tested standard in the field.

Experienced instructors are focused on providing you with the tools you need to pass the new Qualifying Examination, which is the first step toward becoming a DRI Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP), Associate Business Continuity Professional (ABCP), Master Business Continuity Professional (MBCP), Certified Functional Continuity Professional (CFCP), or Certified Business Continuity Vendor (CBCV).

Cost: $1,850.00 CDN plus GST and includes the Qualifying Examination. 

The classroom version includes all instruction for 2 days, continental breakfasts, lunches and morning/afternoon breaks. DRIC Certification: Upon successfully completing the Qualifying Exam one may apply to DRI CANADA for professional certification. The ABCP certification fee is $200 and includes your first year of membership. A Certification Application Fee paid between Jan 1 and Jul 31 will cover the applicant's Membership and Administration Fee to Dec 31 of the current year; a Certification Application Fee paid between Aug 1 and Dec 31 will cover the applicant's Membership and Administration Fee to Dec 31 of the following year..

Lesson 1: Program Initiation and Management
  • Establish the need for a business continuity program.
  • Obtain support and funding for the business continuity program.
  • Build the organizational framework to support the business continuity program.
  • Introduce key concepts, such as program management, risk awareness, identification of critical functions/processes, recovery strategies, training and awareness, and exercising/testing.
Lesson 2: Risk Assessment
  • Identify risks that can adversely affect an entity’s resources or image.
  • Assess risks to determine the potential impacts to the entity, enabling the entity to determine the most effective use of resources to reduce these potential impacts.
Lesson 3: Business Impact Analysis
  • Identify and prioritize the entity’s functions and processes in order to ascertain which ones will have the greatest impact should they not be available.
 
  • Assess the resources required to support the business impact analysis process.
  • Analyze the findings to ascertain any gaps between the entity’s requirements and its ability to deliver those requirements.
Lesson 4: Business Continuity Strategies
  • Select cost-effective strategies to reduce deficiencies as identified during the risk assessment and business impact analysis processes.
Lesson 5: Incident Response
  • Develop and assist with the implementation of an incident management system that defines organizational roles, lines of authority and succession of authority.
  • Define requirements to develop and implement the entity’s incident response plan.
  • Ensure that incident response is coordinated with outside organizations in a timely and effective manner when appropriate.
 
Lesson 6: Plan Development and Implementation
  • Document plans to be used during an incident that will enable the entity to continue to function..
Lesson 7: Awareness and Training Programs
  • Establish and maintain training and awareness programs that result in personnel being able to respond to incidents in a calm and efficient manner.
Lesson 8: Business Continuity Plan Exercise, Audit, and Maintenance
  • Establish an exercise, assessment and maintenance program to maintain a state of readiness.
Lesson 9: Crisis Communications
  • Provide a framework for developing a crisis communications plan.
  • Ensure that the crisis communications plan will provide for timely, effective communication with internal and external parties.
Lesson 10: Coordination with External Agencies
  • Establish policies and procedures to coordinate incident response activities with public entities.

How do you earn your MBCP? The first step is taking and passing this course, which has just been revamped to align with the recently updated DRI Professional Practices for Business Continuity Management the most utilized and time tested standard in the field. Much of the course content is new, as are the course materials and the exam.

Challenging and highly interactive, the course employs a workshop format to present you with a hypothetical company scenario and walk you through an analytical review of its business continuity management program. You won’t just be learning principles of business continuity, you’ll be called upon to apply them critically and accurately. At the conclusion of the course, you will take the Master’s Case Study Examination, an intensive, detailed case study analysis that will rigorously critique and assess your understanding and knowledge of business continuity practices. The goal: to help establish you as a leader in your field.

This intensive two day (16 hour) course prepares participants by practicing for the MBCP (Master Business Continuity Professional) Case Study Exam. This course is intended for professionals with more than 5 years of experience in business continuity and disaster recovery planning. The course addresses all phases of business continuity planning. The Masters Case Study Exam is a challenging four and a half hour case study that assesses the candidate's knowledge and the application of that knowledge.

Audience: In order to register for this course, YOU MUST: (1) have already passed the DRII Qualifying Exam; and (2) be able to document a minimum of five years of business continuity planning experience. DRI strongly recommends to take this course before writing the exam – those who take the course before writing the master’s exam are more successful on the master’s examination.

Business Continuity Executive Seminar – BCLE 250 

This fast paced dialogue style seminar is facilitated by a senior certified instructor or a DRI CANADA executive. The content is a specific overview of the Disaster Recovery Institute’s development methodology and best practices related to the implementation of a business continuity program; also known as a Continuity Of Operations Program (COOP). Topics covered include:

  • The value of the DRI Canada Certification and Education program
  • Business Continuity as a strategic element of Risk Management
  • Risk Management techniques specific to Business Continuity Planning (BCP)
  • Selecting and developing appropriate and cost effective recovery strategies
  • Strategic crisis management versus tactical operations
  • The role of the crisis communications interface to BCP

Participants will receive a high level overview of the standard methodology and best practices used to implement a comprehensive business continuity program. In addition, DRI will demonstrate how Business Continuity, as a process fits with the overall Risk Management discipline.

The seminar provides a valuable awareness of the relationship of Business Continuity to a risk managed service delivery model.

This seminar has been widely used to better understand planning requirements and as a familiarization tool for the terminology and process model of business continuity.
